What Are the Best Poses for UIUC Graduation Photos? (2026 Guide + Inspo Photos)
UIUC’s Spring 2026 graduation season is approaching soon, and if you have a photoshoot planned, you may be considering how you should pose for your photos. You aren’t alone in this struggle, as most students feel awkward or nervous in front of the camera at first. Though I always fully guide my clients on posing during their graduation photoshoot, this guide will give you insight into my methodology for getting natural, confident, and personalized poses for you! I’ve photographed over 5,000 students and over 500 UIUC graduates over the past few years, so through that experience, I’ve learned what works and how to look your best in photos.
In this guide, I’ll go through a variety of poses that are easy to execute, as well as some general tips that everyone should follow when posing. Nevertheless, if you come to your graduation photoshoot without any posing knowledge, you should be completely fine, as every professional photographer should have the ability to pose you well and ensure that your photos turn out phenomenally!
Quick Tips
Posing can vary from very simple to extremely chaotic, but my thought process is that keeping things simple and comfortable for the model is always best, as overcomplicating poses and pushing them to do something they don’t want is always a no-go. It’s always good to start by searching online on Pinterest, Instagram, or TikTok for graduation inspo photos to find ideas on what poses other people do and potentially utilize for your own shoot. However, I would avoid spending too much time overthinking this and trying to remember tons of poses since that’ll stress you out more and you’ll likely end up forgetting most of them, so just keep a few screenshots of your favorites.
Next, some important guidelines to follow when posing include having good posture, using props or the environment around you, and varying your face/body direction. Having good posture always makes you look and feel more confident, so try to keep your back straight and embrace the accomplishment of graduation! Next, it’s nice to lean on things around you, such as walls, handrails, or anything that fits the photo. This will not only give you so many more pose possibilities, but also make the image feel more natural and authentic. Lastly, changing the direction your face and body point in the photo will ensure that every picture in your gallery doesn’t look exactly the same. Switching up how you angle yourself gives you infinite possibilities for poses, but my rule of thumb is never to point your face and body in the same direction to avoid looking stiff.
A few other helpful pieces of advice would be to find a place for your hands, prioritize your facial expression, and just relax. For most people, arms and hands are the most confusing part of posing since they have no idea what to do with them, but finding natural actions or places for them will improve your poses drastically. For girls, this could mean putting them on your hips or holding props, and for guys, this could mean adjusting your tie or watch. Another focal point of an image, if not the biggest one, is your face, meaning you’ll want to make sure you’re showing your best look. Make sure you know which side of your face you prefer before the shoot by taking photos of yourself, then do a variety of facial expressions to see if you like smiling with or without teeth, pushing your chin out more, or mewing in the photos. Finally, it’s important to relax and take a deep breath. Even if posing feels like a lot to process, you should trust your photographer and know they will be able to make you look the best!

Mistakes to Avoid
Now that we’ve gone through a variety of excellent poses you can take advantage of in your graduation photoshoot, it’s useful to go over some quick mistakes to avoid when posing. Having stiffness and discomfort anywhere in your body, especially your face, will affect how you look in the image, so it’s best to be communicative with your photographer if something just doesn’t feel right with a pose. Make sure not to slouch, stand too stiff, or leave your arms hanging, as those are critical aspects that could ruin a pose altogether. Keep your poses confident and hands doing things to help give the photos a more dynamic look, as it’ll make a huge difference in the end.
Going into detail about posing through the blog text is definitely not the easiest, but I have full faith in your photographer to give you the best directions to achieve amazing poses. A few other elements of your look to keep in mind are your smile (making sure it doesn’t look forced), chin (out slightly and down), and eyes (relaxed; not too wide or squinted), so keep in mind the small details around the face matter a lot. Other than those pointers, you should do fantastically during your photoshoot! Overall, just don’t overthink it and have fun with your shoot, it’ll turn out way better if you’re genuinely enjoying it!

Come in with some favorite poses and trust in your photographer to help pose you and fix anything during the photoshoot.
