Where Are The Best UIUC Graduation Photo Spots? (2026 Guide)
Picking your locations is the first step to envisioning your dream graduation photos to commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime milestone! Your memories and achievements will be represented through the photoshoot locations you choose, which can be standard picks or ones that are more personal to you. There are plenty of gorgeous places in and around the University of Illinois campus, and this guide will walk you through making the best location decisions. After photographing over 500+ UIUC graduates, I’ve compiled the best graduation photo spots at UIUC, including landmarks, hidden gems, and additional tips to ensure your photos reflect the magnitude of your accomplishments.
With most graduation photoshoots ranging from 2 to 4 locations, it’s important to choose a mix of campus spots that are both meaningful to you and look visually appealing. Below is the ultimate UIUC graduation photo location guide to assist you in feeling confident about achieving graduation pictures that align with you - let’s begin!
Alma Mater
Alma Mater stands tall at the intersection between campus and Green St. as one of the most prominent statues on campus since 1929. You’ll find students and families congregating around this statue year-round to grab a picture with her. Though the sculpture is impressive and photogenic, there are some downsides to taking photos here; first, the statue is a main attraction during grad season, so it often has a line that can take up to an hour at its busiest. Next, the two buildings behind it, the Illini Union and Altgeld Hall, are both under construction. The Illini Union is said to be under construction until late 2026, while Altgeld Hall won’t be reopened until Fall 2027. The background of your pictures taken in front of Alma will look a bit chaotic due to that. Regardless of the construction projects, it’s still the go-to spot for graduation photos. A tip for getting photos here is to go earlier in the morning to avoid heavy traffic or utilize the Alma Cam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mEf4MbHKDo) to scope out how much foot traffic there is and see when you’re good to go!
The Main Quad
With the Illini Union and Foellinger Auditorium on both sides, UIUC’s Main Quad is one of the most well-maintained areas on the campus where students gather for hangouts, student organization events, and so much more - it’s truly the heart of campus. This wide grass field is a spectacle in the Spring, with trees branching along paths and student life flourishing. From here, you’re able to view the most gorgeous U. of I. architecture along with its diverse student atmosphere. There’s no doubt you’ll have to get photos at the Main Quad. A tip is to take photos here in the morning or near sunset during “golden hour” for the best lighting, as the sunlight will reflect off buildings and produce the most flattering image. Foellinger Auditorium
Standing tall at one end of the Quad, Foellinger Auditorium is a multi-purpose building where students attend lectures, events, and concerts. With incredible design, including a unique teal dome roof and a pineapple at its pinnacle, there’s so much to love about it for photos. Though it’s an extremely busy location, there are plenty of unique ways to capture the perfect photo around this landmark, even at its busiest. Some great photo ideas include being on the steps, going from further on the Quad, and looking out at the Quad/Union from the Foellinger walking area. There’s truly so much to offer in terms of photos, and they tend to add vibrant blue and orange pillar cover designs by the beginning of May.
Japan House
Next, one of my personal favorite spots for photography - Japan House. Although a bit far from campus, the garden is an ethereal spot that is almost always photogenic and lush with beautiful plant and animal life. The calm and elegant atmosphere alongside enchanting nature sights including flowers, birds, cherry blossoms, and more, will make for beautifully elevated images. The bridge, pond, and trees are bound to make for a lovely background contrasting your graduation colors, especially white. If you’re looking to take photos with the cherry blossoms, they only appear shortly in the Spring around mid-April, so keep a lookout for that. Additionally, it’s best to go in the early morning to avoid too much crowding.
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
The Krannert Center houses tons of concerts, musical performances, plays, and other arts within its mesmerizing structure. The primary spot to grab photos is at the white staircase outdoors, where the clean, white background will emphasize the subject along with our signature orange/blue colors. The inside is very polished, too, but isn’t the best due to low lighting.
Your College Building
With most of the other spots being wide-appealing, taking your graduation photoshoot in a direction that reflects you is a great way to make the photos feel more personal. With most of your time at UIUC being spent inside your college program’s building, it’s essential to get some photos here to commemorate the memories and journey you’ve gone through. Have it be the ECE building or Business Instructional Facility (BIF), there are tons of unique college buildings that photograph wonderfully! Get some shots at the entrance, or a classroom with props in the seat you sat in for countless hours, that you’re now ready to leave behind.
Hallene Gateway
On the east entrance of campus, a prestigious sandstone gate provides a grand welcome to students entering the university. With perfect natural framing and clean design, Hallene Gateway is a magnificent place to capture graduation photos such as cap tosses, champagne pops, and unique poses. The pathway, the Illinois 1867 sign, and the fountain behind it pair for a gorgeous composition. This is a spot that tends to get a lot of traction near graduation season, so it’s good to get here early to avoid the lines.
Alice Campbell Alumni Center and Fountain
Right behind Hallene Gateway is another momentous location for photos - the UIUC fountain! There’s so much to love about the beautiful fountain including the flowers, greenery, great lighting, and clean backgrounds. The Alice Campbell Alumni Center building is incredible too with a modern interior design and a spot where diplomas hang from the ceiling. The fountain itself is usually on through April and May, while also getting dyed orange around May time.
The Libraries
With tons of memories attached to your favorite library from group study sessions to late night test crams, grabbing some photos at one of the libraries is a great choice! With options including the Grainger Engineering Library, Funk ACES Library, and Main Library, there are countless books to pose with. Main Library is my personal favorite for photography because of the large glossy wood staircase, overhead chandeliers, and massive study room. Photos here are one of a kind and showcase the college experience beautifully.
Memorial Stadium
Moving on to the school’s football stadium, Memorial Stadium is a top tier location with one of the most desirable photo spots - the pillars. To begin, the massive field with University of Illinois logography all around and vast stadium design is already a great shot. Going up the stairs or elevator, you get to the iconic stadium pillars which are just perfect for graduation photos. First, the pillars are a clean beige color which contrasts excellently with the blue cap and gown. The length of the path also creates depth and hypnotic symmetry to emphasize you as the subject. These are open for a short period between May 4th to 8th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., so make sure to sign up for a slot and get photos here while you can!
Grange Grove Gate
On the street outside of Memorial Stadium is the Grange Grove Gate, which is the primary stadium entrance for football games. The gate presents a huge University of Illinois logo with the text “Grange Grove” above that and “ILLINI” in the back on the stadium. All the aspects synchronize to form powerful photos. This is the spot where people tend to pop champagne at the ground, even getting sticky for an iconic shot by the end of grad season. I would actually avoid shooting here during golden hour or after mid day as the sun will beam directly at this spot, so going in the morning is better for a nicer/more flattering backlight. Here, you can get a close up of you and the gate logo, but I would prioritize wider shots that showcase the vast field.
South Quad Bell Tower
Going down from the Main Quad, you’ll find yourself at the South Quad Bell Tower area which students walk through to get to class and hang out in. This area tends to be a lot less crowded compared to the Main Quad, so it’s nice to grab clean photos with tons of greenery and sky in the back alongside the prominent bell tower. A great spot for cap tosses and running shots
Engineering Quad
North of the Main Quad is the Engineering Quad past Boneyard Creek, marked by the massive curving Grainer Library peering over the curving paths and well-maintained grass flats. If you’re graduating from any Engineering program at U. of I., this is a must capture spot as much of your time was likely spent here. Additionally, buildings around the area such as CIF, Beckman Institute, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building (ECEB), and other prominent engineering-related spaces fill the north campus.
Fields/Farm
Moving on, going off campus down south will bring you to the farmland you may pass when going to and from campus. Though very unconventional for graduation photos, I’ve shot a couple out here and they’ve turned out amazing every single time. Your photos will turn out unique, showcase the true nature of UIUC, and make for unreal backgrounds. The lighting at golden hour here makes for unique silhouette shots and backlight photos which will stand out a ton compared to regular campus photos. Maybe you’ll even get an animal in the background!
University Sign (Wright St.)
Around the corners of campus, there are University of Illinois signs, but this one is the best for photos since there aren’t any obstructions, and the background looks fabulous. Right between the engineering campus and the city of Champaign, you’ll find a canopy of trees over a pathway and the University of Illinois sign at the end. A great spot to wave your goodbyes to campus.
Favorite Restaurant or Bar
Lastly, there isn’t anything more YOU than taking photos at your favorite UIUC restaurant or bar. With plenty of different preferences, it’s whatever you think will fit you best, but capturing a few final shots at the spot that served you food and drinks to help you get through tough academic times or celebrate achievements is essential.
